Savannah Bobo-BresslerMajor: Public Relations with Political Science minor
From: Gallatin, TN Why #ItStartsWithYou: Mental illness is something that I’ve grown up around. Friends, family members, and myself included have been affected by it. I have been raised to think of mental health as a normal part of life, just like physical health. However, when I stepped outside of my familial bubble, that was not always the case. My hope is that through this campaign others see the importance of mental health without the negativity and shame that some try to attach onto it. Therefore, people will not be afraid or ashamed of getting the help they deserve. |

From: Commack, NY Why #ItStartsWithYou: Five years ago, I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. My mental health condition made me feel like I was an outsider and misunderstood by the culture and community around me. My hope is that initiatives like ours prevent others from experiencing what I did, and instead allow them to feel like they are still valued, empowered individuals. |
Megan Heiner Major: Public Relations with Corporate Communications minor
From: Rowlett, TX Why #ItStartsWithYou: I’ve seen the good that comes when we decide to open our ears and just listen. As someone who can never sympathize but always does her best to empathize, I want to be a good steward of the gifts I’ve been given by building and being a part of a community that supports each other by hearing each other. |
Kayla OrelMajor: Public Relations and Commercial Music
From: Cleveland, OH Why #ItStartsWithYou: As someone who has seen close friends and family struggle with their mental health and as someone who struggles with a mental health condition, I find myself extremely passionate about our campaign and the potential impact that it could have on Belmont’s community. I am so honored to be advocating for a cause that I and so many others are personally connected to. My hope is that through this campaign we can help to foster a community of supportive relationships and active listeners. |
